Metal is like, so gay, man

I've never been a huge fan of heavy metal, despite owning a Sepultura album or two. I certainly suspect I would have found it a lot more difficult to come out had I been a gay metal fan. That said, I can appreciate a heavy riff as well as the next person.

What am I on about, you ask?

Decibel magazine in the US has just posted a long article about being gay and into heavy metal. It quotes everyone from Judas Priest's Rob Halford (pictured left, who came out in 1998) to Faith No More's keyboard player, Roddy Bottum.

It's a good read, although it doesn't necessarily have anything new to say. Go check it out.

Hi Richard, yeah nothing new in that article really, still interesting. It'd be nice to see a similiar article on hip-hop, do you know of one? I'm trying to think of any openly out Hip Hop Homosexuals, but admit i'm stumped.

There's a great doco on homo-hop that I'm trying to talk the Melbourne Queer Film Festival into showing next year, Dave.

Some queer hiphop artists I know of, just of the top of head, include Cyryus and Katastrophe. Check out www.gayhiphop.com for a few more leads.

hmmm, i think it mirrors the paucity of openly gay men in public life, though for sure it must be more rare in subcultures that are known for their homophobia [every time i use the word homophobia, i hear janeane garofalo saying in that funny way she did in reality bites, which is weird because in my mind it's now an amusing word for an ugly phenomenon...anyway]. the article was good - i found the comparison of lesbians and gay men useful, as the titillation factor of "girl-on-girl action" is no less homophobic, really. obviously, it's also misogynistic in the extreeeeeme but that's another rant.

Nerk! I think Roddy Bottum is about the best name I've ever heard. Then, I am rather immature.
